Like many families, the Gimbutas family seen here left Lithuania fleeing westward with belongings and people piled into a cart driven by two horses. This image shows them somewhere between Jurbarkas and Žvingiai July 1944.
That same year The Brokas family of five (Uršulė and Jonas, the parents; Elena, Česlova, and Irena, the daughters) left Alvitas, Lithuania in the summer of 1944. They traveled through Kybartai and Eitkūnai, by wagon and horse, and in the company of a few other families. Their flight was interrupted many times by the bombings accompanying the front and, at least once, by German authorities seeking able-bodied men.
