Photograph, Portrait of Emil Preiss, 1928.

Born in Germany, Emil Preiss immigrated to the U.S. in 1924. Because of his individual achievements and the training he gave to young gymastics stars, Preiss quickly became the image of American gymnastics. He won the National AAU, Turner, and German championships in 1925, 1926, and 1928 respectively. After coaching at the Chicago Turners gymnastics center from 1926 to 1930, Preiss became the gymnastics coach at the University of Pennsylvania.
